Cutting your own hair man: how can I do that?
It is easier to go to a barbershop to have your hair cut, but there are reasons and opportunities to do it yourself. Especially if you want to save some money, then you can consider cutting your own hair.
Many men are already used to maintain their own beard, but cutting your own hair is something less men do. Of course there are reasons for this, because it is more difficult to cut your own hair compared to maintaining your own beard.
What do I need to cut my own hair?
It is important to have the correct tools to cut your own hair properly. So, it requires a (small) upfront investment before you start to save some money.
Clippers
As a man clippers are a must-have tool to have if you decided to cut your own hair. Clippers are necessary to maintain the sides and back properly. If you ever feel confident enough to give yourself a nice (skin)fade, then you definitely need clippers as well.
Hair scissors
Hair scissors are very important, because with regular scissors you will not get very far. Hair scissors will make it easier to cut your own hair and are easier to manage.
Hand-held mirror
When you have clippers and a good pair of hair scissors, then you can start cutting, but to see what you are doing, you should use a hand-held mirror. This mirror is especially useful for when you are cutting the back of your hair.
In that case you will use the hand-held mirror in combination with your bathroom mirror or other mirror, to see if you are cutting the back and sides nicely.
Bonus items you can consider buying to cut your own hair
The three items mentioned before you will need for sure when you start cutting your own hair, but there are a few other tools you could consider getting.
Cutting cape
A relatively cheap item to get and it will keep your clothes clean while cutting. Some men probably do not really mind it that much if they are covered in hair and will just jump in the shower afterwards, but if you want to invest in your home cutting experience, then a cutting cape is a nice bonus item.
Hair thinning scissors
These are especially useful for men that have very thick or coarse hair. A regular pair of hair scissors cannot thin out your hair. Once in a while it is beneficial to thin out your hair a bit, because that improves the manageability and flexibility of your hair.
So, when you have very thick hair and you are thinking of cutting your own hair, then it is definitely smart considering purchasing hair thinning scissors.
Choosing the correct haircut
When you have all the tools at home you need to start cutting your own hair as a man, then it is time to choose a good haircut. Not every haircut will suit you, so keep your face shape in mind.
Luckily we wrote a very useful blog post a while back about the different hairstyles and face shapes. This read that one, click here!
Cutting your own hair
Now it is finally time to start cutting your own hair. Make sure you washed your hair with a good shampoo and conditioner, because that will make things a lot easier. If there is still some product in your hair, then the scissors will struggle a bit and also clippers cannot get through so easy.
Cutting the sides
When you start cutting your own hair as a man, then it is usually the easiest to start with the sides.
Use the clippers and the desired guard to decide the length of your sides. Look closely in the mirror while you are cutting the sides with the clippers. so you will not miss a spot.
Go back and forth a few times with the clippers to make sure all spots are even.
Cutting the back
This is the part that requires the earlier mentioned hand-held mirror. You can use it in combination with your bathroom mirror to see what you are doing. Start at the bottom and work your way up with the clippers. It works pretty much the same as you did with your sides.
Cutting the top
When you have chosen for a relatively short hairstyle, then you can cut the top with the clippers, but presumably you want to keep it a bit longer on top.
In that case it is time to get the hair scissors and potentially a comb. You can use either your fingers or a comb to decide the length of your hair on top. It is important to continuously have the same length and to cut your hair straight.
For men with thicker hair this is also the phase to start thinning out your hair. Thinning out your hair will also hide small imperfections if you did not managed to cut your hair the same length everywhere.
Perfecting the hairline
This is probably one of the hardest things to do when you just started out to cut your own hair as a man. The hairline between the hair on top and the sides and back. This needs to be cleaned up nicely so your hairstyle looks best.
It is advisable to use the clippers without any guard. Using a comb is an option to carefully clean up the hairline. Cut only a little bit each time, so you minimize the risk of cutting it too short.
Styling your hair
When you cut your own amazing hairstyle, then you want to style it just as amazingly too of course. Luckily there are many great hair products for that. In our Moquer shop you can find hundreds of premium hair styling products for men, so be sure to check that out!
Conclusion
After reading this blog post you hopefully learned the basics about cutting your own hair as a man. The first time will obviously not give you the best result yet, because it requires some practice to really be able to cut your own hair nicely.
Once you are getting better at it, you can even consider giving yourself a fade. Then your hairstyle will even look more professional. In that case you should cut the sides and back in two different lengths with the clippers. After that you will blend the different lengths, so that it looks real smooth. Undercuts are very popular hairstyles nowadays.
Good luck cutting your own hair! And worst case scenario you can go back to your barber again.
